Miranda NG, etc cannot connect to MSN Network

Hello,

Since early yesterday, I've been unable to connect to the Messenger network with the 2 addresses provided by either Miranda NG and Instantbird. The servers attached to those addresses seem to be down.

The hostnames aregateway.messenger.hotmail.com

messenger.hotmail.com

gateway.messenger.hotmail.com

The odd thing is I've got access to an older XP system with Windows Messenger, and my account works just fine there. What hostnames does Windows Messenger use to login to? And could they be used in Miranda IM, NG, instantbird and Pidgin on Linux and Adium on the Mac?

For those who use Miranda NG, get the updated Msn Plugin from: http://miranda-ng.org/distr/x32/Plugins/msn.zip

Messenger reviver should do the trick.

Update:

For those of you who haven't been able to connect to msn over the last few hours, using Miranda IM or NG, Instantbird, Adium, Pidgen, you need to change the main direct connection from:

messenger.hotmail.com

to

msn.messengergeek.com

I tried that on Miranda, and got nothing. what about the gateway? I tried changing that to the same thing with no results.

Post 8 by ¤§¤spike¤§¤ (This site is so "educational") on Friday, 19-Dec-2014 9:03:06

Odd, here on Miranda NG 0.95.2 with Msn Plugin:
msn.dll MSN protocol 0.11.1.2

The msn server switch worked with no issues.

Post 9 by zackmack2000 ( extreme killer of the keys) on Friday, 19-Dec-2014 13:27:16

hmmm, I'll have to update my version of miranda whenever I get back onto
windowws

Post 10 by zackmack2000 ( extreme killer of the keys) on Friday, 19-Dec-2014 22:09:20

ok, I managed to get it fixt on Miranda. but as far as adium, no go.

Post 11 by ¤§¤spike¤§¤ (This site is so "educational") on Saturday, 20-Dec-2014 8:37:35

Hi zackmack2000,

There's Adium Messenger Reviver for the Mac. It should solve the Msn login issue once you switch the server address which you did already.

Post 12 by zackmack2000 ( extreme killer of the keys) on Sunday, 21-Dec-2014 2:50:10

yes, that did work. I must say, if you want this to work on adium after doing
this, be sure that the checkbox that says something about use http or
something is unchecked, but the one that says allow direct connections is
checked. it seemd to fix the problem

Post 13 by ¤§¤spike¤§¤ (This site is so "educational") on Saturday, 16-May-2015 14:32:52

Update, Msn's network works once again in Miranda NG. You need to get the latest version of the msn plugin from Miranda NG's site.

The link to it for 32 bit is below.

http://miranda-ng.org/distr/x32/Plugins/msn.zip

This worked for my msn account.

Post 14 by zackmack2000 ( extreme killer of the keys) on Sunday, 17-May-2015 12:23:50

this is odd. I've tried this with the version of Miranda I have and I get a miranda32.exe startup error message saying that the program can not start because msvcr100.dll file is missing and to reinstall the program to fix the problem. I'm thinking that this is doing this because I have an older version of Miranda, it's not ng, it's the regular Miranda i m.

Post 15 by zackmack2000 ( extreme killer of the keys) on Sunday, 17-May-2015 13:11:40

I went and got a preconfigured version of Miranda ng to see if it would work, after I told it to use my profile that I had for my older version of Miranda and updated all the plug-ins for Miranda ng and restarted it , still no luck at all. everything is still the same, can't connect to msn. odd.

Post 16 by ¤§¤spike¤§¤ (This site is so "educational") on Sunday, 17-May-2015 13:55:01

zackmack2000

I've got Miranda NG0.95.4 with the msn plugin I linked to above. The version of the plugin that I use is:

msn.dll MSN protocol 0.12.1.1

I had to redo my profile from scratch, but it does work here just fine. I use a custom dat file with no personal information, but has entries for jabber using fb chat and msn's network.

ah, I see.

To those who have successfully switched to the new MSN plugin, keep the link that I gave you handy, there was an update to it not too long ago.

To those who are planning to switch to it, and have a linked msn account with Skype, the conversations you have in Miranda NG can only be cleared if you do so in Skype.

I believe that Miranda NG should include the new MSN plugin in its next major build.

Post 19 by ¤§¤spike¤§¤ (This site is so "educational") on Monday, 11-Apr-2016 2:22:04

I'm running the latest Alpha Build of MirandaNG which of this writing is 0.9.55 with the msn plugin, and the openssl library. The newest plugin won't connect to msn. It is being worked on. Same for some FB users.

Just a question of interest?
Why strubble so hard with this when Skype can be used and all updates work easy?

Post 21 by ¤§¤spike¤§¤ (This site is so "educational") on Tuesday, 12-Apr-2016 4:44:12

Because MirandaNG is much faster than Skype and uses way less ram. Though Skype's the only way you can still call people, unless they get that and messenger contacts to display using the SkypeWeb plugin for MirandaNG.

Post 22 by forereel (Just posting.) on Tuesday, 12-Apr-2016 8:18:33

Faster in what way?
I'm asking because I'm interested in learning why.
As far as ram, most computers have plenty now, so Skype isn't really an issue as far as ram anymore.

Post 23 by ¤§¤spike¤§¤ (This site is so "educational") on Tuesday, 12-Apr-2016 8:36:08

Faster in launch time, and over all cpu resource usage.

Post 24 by forereel (Just posting.) on Tuesday, 12-Apr-2016 12:36:26

Okay.
I have your reasons.
Thanks.
Smile.
It was what I wanted to know.

I used to use the jabber plug in for fb, but that thing died months ago. I've also discovered earlier today that the aim plug-in doesn't connect to aim. trillian on the mac side does though. MSN has never, and I mean never worked, no matter what I did, after I've been trying to make it work for months.

Personally, I encourage everyone to start moving away from the more outdated messenger services like AIM, myself. Skype and facebook messenger now seem to be the biggest messengers that are constantly evolving and getting updates, though admittedly skype might not work too well on older machines. I have a machine with 4 gigs of ram though, and have not experienced any of the slow launching time that poster 23 mentioned in his post. Nor have I experienced any major drain on my CPU, though admittedly I don't usually have a million windows open at one time. So, I don't know how heavily he uses his computer's resources at any given time himself. Skype is also definitely more accessible than it use to be, with add-ons for screen readers like NVDA and scripts for other screen readers like JAWS that have made it quite simple to read messages and do all that we need to do. You can even get rid of the ads if you feel that inclined.

Post 27 by forereel (Just posting.) on Saturday, 16-Apr-2016 13:30:42

Yes, but people refuse change.
They just want to continue what they use.
Microsoft is and has, stopped updating MSN, so it is difficult to continue working with.
I think it is half the fun to keep using these, so people have something to do as well.
Smile.
It was why I stated I understand.

zackmack2000,

I've not used AIM for a while in Miranda NG so no comment. I use the Facebook Protocol plugin in Miranda with no issues. In my case, MSN's issues started a while ago, maybe late last month when Microsoft changed the Hotmail gateways that used to work to Skype servers that apparently don't see the Miranda NG client as valid after the first connection and token is exchanged. I know Skype's more accessible than it used to be, and you can remove adds from it. The Facebook Protocol plugin for Miranda NG works for most people, not all. It is being worked on in the latest Alpha Build for 32 and 64 bit Windows..

Post 29 by ¤§¤spike¤§¤ (This site is so "educational") on Saturday, 04-Mar-2017 7:39:27

AIM might no longer allow Miranda NG or other clients to access its network. the MSN plugin is still being worked on, as are the skype and Facebook plugins. https://arstechnica.com/business/2017/02/aol-will-cut-off-third-party-app-access-to-aim/

Post 30 by ¤§¤spike¤§¤ (This site is so "educational") on Sunday, 05-Mar-2017 14:26:42

Update:

As of this morning, MSN should work again under Miranda NG. It might take sometime for the contact list to refresh, though.

Post 31 by ¤§¤spike¤§¤ (This site is so "educational") on Thursday, 28-Sep-2017 5:13:25

As of a few days ago, MirandaNG 0.95.6 was released. I believe they've finally fixed the msn issue. Unsure about AIM for those who use it, though.

AOL's instant messaging service will be turned off on December 15 of this year. https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/10/kthxbai-aol-instant-messenger-is-being-turned-off-on-december-15th/

I thought it was December 19.

Post 34 by forereel (Just posting.) on Saturday, 07-Oct-2017 0:05:58

Does 4 days make a difference?
I suppose you could have time to tell all your contacts what you really think of them before they can't talk back.?
Laughing.

Post 35 by zackmack2000 ( extreme killer of the keys) on Saturday, 07-Oct-2017 9:18:50

good lord that thing is going bye bye finally lol. for the life of me, I still couldn't get msn to work no matter what I tried, and also, using fb with Miranda was crazy at start up, somehow, I was involved in a hell of a bunch of chats and stuff that were old as hell, and every damn time I would start Miranda, those damn chats would come up without fail. I would have to go and delete them every single time. so I gave up.

Post 36 by forereel (Just posting.) on Saturday, 07-Oct-2017 11:20:20

I enjoyed MSN while it was working.
Never used anything to connect to it, but always used it directly.
When Microsoft switched to Skype, it was an easy transition, so that is what I use now.

Post 37 by ¤§¤spike¤§¤ (This site is so "educational") on Saturday, 07-Oct-2017 13:59:55

I use MSN mainly because some of my contacts use it and only it. As for the old chats thing, Zack, what network was this for?

Post 38 by chelslicious (like it or not, I'm gonna say what I mean. all the time.) on Saturday, 07-Oct-2017 16:02:39

Maybe you should tell your contacts to get with the program of change since these methods you are talking about in this topic are becoming obsolete.

Post 39 by forereel (Just posting.) on Saturday, 07-Oct-2017 21:06:30

No. just needs to add the contacts to Skype, or sign in using a Microsoft account and all the MSN contacts will come aavailable.
At that point all contacts that use MSN only will receive messages from Skype.

Post 40 by zackmack2000 ( extreme killer of the keys) on Sunday, 08-Oct-2017 15:56:26

the chats were coming up using the fb plug-in. like I said, they would come up
every damn time at startup, I would have to open the, close them out and then
delete them because they would show up as contacts in my list on fb contacts
which was extremely weird and annoying.

Post 41 by ¤§¤spike¤§¤ (This site is so "educational") on Monday, 09-Oct-2017 0:36:19

HI Zack,

The Facebook Plugin chat thing I've seen, but not all that often. The only way to delete chats and not have them appear in MirandaNG is for you to log into the Facebook site or the mobile site and delete your chat history that way by contact or group chats in Facebook. I hope this helped.
